“August is the slow, gentle month that stretches out the longest across the span of a year. It yawns and lingers on with the light in its palms.” Victoria Erickson

At the end of August a group of 12 intrepid drivers struck out on a harrowing journey…OK, maybe that’s a bit too much alliteration. It definitely wasn’t harrowing, but it was a great time! This was the inaugural year for this tour and it is pretty far from the major metropolitan Seattle area, so an early start for some to get to Port Gamble Waterfront by 8:00 am. For those who don’t know, Port Gamble is a sleepy little former lumber town with small shops, B&Bs, and restaurants. The waterfront has a huge America flag and an amazing view of the Hood Canal. It was a great place to check-in, meet new people, and enjoy the view.

We also had a great diversity of cars, from a 318is E30 to a modern M550i. There was even a Mini (we don’t discriminate!). It was a bit misty (typical for this time of year) at the start but we all set off over the Hood Canal bridge by 8:30. The tour was about four hours, passing though Port Ludlow, Port Angeles, Fort Warden, Sequim, Dungeness County Park, and finally Port Angeles.

We stopped about every hour for breaks and some nice views of the Strait of San Juan de Fuca. The mist burned off within an hour and the weather was a pleasant 60-75F for the entire trip--had my convertible top down the entire time. The tour meandered off the typical beaten highway paths into wooded backroads that our cars (and their occupants) enjoyed. Hopefully this tour stays on the club calendar next year!

Hope to see you out there on one of our clubs road tours next time!
