I got involved in the Club in 1978. In high school I was a car guy. My first car was a 1968 Camaro Z-28 I bought from a co-worker when the car was a year old, and I was a senior in high school. Later I became more involved in sailing and less in cars, but then I discovered BMW and have been a BMW enthusiast ever since.

In about 1980 I offered to do some writing for Zündfolge. This led me to joining the chapter’s board in July 1982. A year later, I became chapter President. At the time, our fiscal year ended on June 30th, it was not convenient given that is the busiest time for the Club’s activities. We changed our fiscal year to the calendar year, so the change of officers was during our slowest time of year. During the transition, I was President for 18 months.

I’ve been on the board ever since with about one year off for personal reasons. Here’s the full history:

1982-1983 Vice President

1983-1984 President

1984 Past President

1986 Activities

1987-1988 Track Program/Activities

1989-2001 Zündfolge Editor

2003 Secretary

2004-2007 Treasurer

2008-2009 Driving Events Coordinator

2010-2012 Treasurer

2013-2025 Zündfolge Editor

So, 44 years on the board with one year off for personal reasons. Obviously, I’ve enjoyed it, and BMW cars and like-minded enthusiasts have been the center of my social life for most of my adult life. Many of my best friends I’ve gotten to know via Club membership.

I’m also an avid BMW collector. I’ve got a nice collection of 1/43 scale models, but my biggest joy is the largest collection of BMW books in the world: over 900. BMW Group Classic doesn’t have that many, I’ve checked.

My first article published in Roundel was in April 1984. I’m still a Roundel staff writer. I also wrote for Bimmer magazine and wrote a book on the Z4.

Mostly I like driving BMWs. I currently have an i3 as my daily driver, an F87 M2 as my track car and a (no E number) Z1 as a show/fun car. Along the way I’ve also owned an E21 320i, E28 M5, 2002 Touring, E30 325ix, E36 328i, and R53 Mini Cooper S JCW. I’ve been a track instructor since 1983.

My next goal is to retire from the board in the next few years and transition to a younger generation of BMW enthusiasts to lead the chapter.
